Product Line Talk in Johannesburg

On Jan. 25th I was talking to 80 developers in Johannesburg about Software Product Lines. The event was hosted by Microsoft in Johannesburg and the feedback from the atendees was great.

SAW 2008

I attended the Software Architecture Workshop (SAW) in South Africa from Jan. 21st until Jan. 24th in Bakubung. The topics this year ranged from team management, OSGI, project estimation, AOP, to Design Patterns. As usual the workshop was hold in the OpenSpace format and was very intense. The discussions continued during breaks on the game drive and at the bar until late at night. As usual, it was a great event with hand selected top experts and obviously a lot of fun.

Business Case For Software Factories

I am working on a new article about the Business Value of Software Factories.......
In this article we will discuss our approach, the difficulties we encountered, and the quantitative results of building a thin, vertical slice of a system using the Software Factory approach. The goal of this work was showing the quantitative measurable business value of introducing the Software Factories paradigm in a large enterprise development project.

Introduction
Why Software Factories? This is a question we frequently get asked from many of our clients when introducing our work. While it seems obvious that increased reuse, higher level of abstraction and increased automation provides advantages to today’s text based software development efforts, it is not enough to justify the necessary upfront investment to upper management and other stakeholders. Therefore, we started to look for quantitative data would clearly show the business case for using this paradigm. ......

Stay tuned, you will be able to find this article online soon.... Probably on MSDN....

Factory as a pattern

After extensive discussions with Jack and Wojtek we decided to use the form of a pattern to describe a Software Factory. We believe this will provide a nice structured form to explain the Software Factory.
Furthermore we will use SCBAT from the Patterns Group as a basis for our case study..... This will be exciting.....

Software Factories as a pattern

In discussions we had with Wojtek and Jack we decided to use the pattern analogy to describe a Software Factory. We believe this is a nice way to provide a structured description in a form that is already proven.....
